MASHH
The MASHH Clinic Collective is a grassroots organization that stands for “Medicine for All Seeking Health and Healing.” The collective is “dedicated to supporting optimal health while defending the earth.” I interviewed MASHH’s found, Greta (a.k.a Grizz) who has been a lifelong environmentalist; she found herbalism through her journey with direct environmental action in the US. I was excited to sit down with her at her home in Humboldt County, and I’m really pleased to share this podcast with you on “The Positive Fantastic.”
In the episode Grizz shares her own story and also some wonderful notes from her recipes for fire cyder and her tried and true hydration formula for the masses which she has developed over the course of many years and many gatherings. Take a listen to our interview here.
Greta’s Radical Bio
Greta has been deeply involved in numerous direct action campaigns as a medic, bodyworker, and herbalist. She was raised in the wilds of Montana and has been an Earth First! herbalist and action medic since 1992 at forest defense and indigenous land rights campaigns. Her first major action was hurling her body in front of a buffalo hunter’s gun to defend a mother bison on the outskirts of Yellowstone Park in 1990. She helped start the Center for Biological Diversity in 1992, treating mass pepper spray casualty in Fortuna, CA during campaigns to save the redwoods. She co-bottomlined the Convergence Space Herbal First Aid Clinic during the WTO/Seattle Shutdown in 1999 directly experiencing massive police brutality and was the Camp Herbalist at Ruckus Society action camps for several years. Greta founded the MASHH Clinic Collective in 2001, was a part of the Black Cross Health Collective who researched remedies for Chemical Weapons, and gave trainings in First Aid and Basic Health & Safety at Militant Actions to hundreds of activists. She organized the first Wilderness First Responder Course for Activists in 2001. Most recently, vetting volunteer Paramedics, EMTs, and Street Medics for the Standing Rock Medic Healer Council.
The MASHH Collective Vision
“We envision a world where sustainable, affordable, holistic health care is accessible to all and healthcare is truly treated as a right. We envision a world in which the health of the planet’s ecosystems is protected for future generations. We believe that together we can move towards vibrant communities and a healthy planet, a just economy, and a better future for all. We believe that fundamental social change is not only possible, but deeply necessary. We believe that our lifetimes come at a decisive moment in the history of our planet—a time of intersecting crises that requires creative, bold and strategic action. Our vision is to completely transform the current disease-centered model of healthcare in the U.S. into a proactive, integrative & holistic medicine paradigm of healthcare!”
