Love Mischief

Kristy Hellum poet on The Positive Fantastic

In the eighth episode of “The Positive Fantastic” Podcast my poet friend and I played some “Love Mischief.” This dark moon episode dives deep into the ocean of evocative word waves with Humboldt County poet Kristy Hellum.

I visited Kristy in Arcata where we had a marvelous time playing with semiotics and meaning, crafting a revolution with our tongues and our lungs and desire to share our creativity. As an author and a poet myself, I found this interview to be deeply satisfying. Perhaps it will also scratch your own itches for poetic sustenance.

In addition to our own author banter, Kristy recites several of her poems from her poetry book “Lifted” in this episode. I hope you’ll find yourself at home in our duet of love mischief makers, as we saturate your soul in a luscious tapestry of woven word wonder.

The song featured in the episode is called “Seashell” and it’s by the Freys —this song comes to you from one of my past lives as a rock star with my family band. The original words and music are by Daniel Frey. The song goes along with the episode’s PSA about “Mermaid Church.”

This review of Kristy’s Poetry book expressed exactly why I feel so passionate about spreading her poems. “Lifted is impeccably honest and rare. Kristy Hellum shares with us poetry that makes suffering almost seem worthwhile. Let yourself be staggered by a phrase. This is raw and important wisdom for a time of chaos. Her poetic encouragement for authentic grieving is brilliant, seductive, and aimed straight for the heart. May we all be so fortunate to be touched by poetry that makes us want to sing and dance, laugh and cry, all in the same moment.”

About the author, Kristy Hellum. “As a storyteller, activist, dancer, and soul-centered psychotherapist in San Francisco’s North Bay, my work focuses on finding meaning in sorrow, transforming suffering into wisdom, and helping to create deeper intimacy with Self and others. I teach mind-body-spirit dance (NIA) and lead interfaith Gospel Singing in workshops and in the streets. I find poetry erupting most often in the company of magnificent trees and loud oceans. I get to be a mother of two extraordinary beings and am honored to be a mentor to many Soul friends.”

I hope you’ll enjoy our poetic play as we love mischief makers explore the notion of a sharetocracy where everyone feels and everyone wins. Kristy recites several of her poems during the episode; enjoy this video of Kristy’s poem “Cupped Hands.”
